The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) appointed a sixth to a grandmother if no mother is left to inherit before her.
وَعَنِ ابْنِ بُرَيْدَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ;
«أَنَّ اَلنَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ جَعَلَ لِلْجَدَّةِ اَلسُّدُسَ، إِذَا لَمْ يَكُنْ دُونَهَا أُمٌّ»

حسن. رواه أبو داود (2895)، والنسائي في «الكبرى» (4 /73)، وابن الجارود (960)، وابن عدي في ط«الكامل» (4637). وفي سنده أبو المنيب؛ عبيد الله العتكي مختلف فيه. وقال ابن عدي: «ولأبي المنيب هذا أحاديث غير ما ذكرت، وهو عندي لا بأس به»
