The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was the most generous of people in charity, but he was generous to the utmost in the month of Ramadan. Gabriel (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would meet him every year during the month of Ramadan until it ended, and the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) recited to him the Qur’an; and when Gabriel met him the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was most generous in giving charity like the blowing wind.

What it means

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was the most generous of people, and his generosity was more intense in the month of Ramadan when he would give what was appropriate to those who were worthy of that. His increased generosity was caused by two things: First: His meeting with Gabriel (peace be upon him). Second: Revising the Qur’an, which is to recite it by heart. Gabriel (peace be upon him) would revise all that was revealed of the Qur’an with him.

Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was more generous, more giving, more intense in doing good, and faster in bringing benefit to the people than a good wind sent by Allah with rain and mercy.

What it teaches

  • The Hadīth shows the Prophet's extreme generosity, especially during Ramadan, the month of extensive worship and goodness.
  • It urges us to be generous at all times, and we are recommended to be more generous during the month of Ramadan.
  • We should engage more in generosity, giving, benevolence, and recitation of the Qur’an during the month of Ramadan.
  • One of the means of preserving knowledge is to revise it with the seekers of knowledge and the scholars.
