I heard the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) say: Keeping watch for a day and a night is better (in point of reward) than fasting for a whole month and standing in prayer every night. If a person dies (while, performing this duty), his (meritorious) activity will continue and he will go on receiving his reward for it perpetually and will be saved from the torture of the grave.

(Dediki): Bize Şu'be, Amr b. Mürra'dan naklen rivayet etti. Oda Ebû Vâil'i rivayet ederken dinlemiş ki, İbni Mes'ûd'a bir adam gelerek: — Ben, bu akşam bütün mufassal sûreleri bir rek'âtda okudum... demiş.

Bunun üzerine Abdullah: — Şiir geveler gibi geveleyerek mi? demiş ve sözüne devamla : — Vallahi Resûlullah (Sallallahu Aleyhi ve Sellem)'in bir arada okuduğu biribirine denk sûreleri ben çok iyi bilirim... diyerek; mufassal sûrelerden yirmi tanesini zikretmiş; bunların her rek'âtda ikişer ikişer okunduğunu söylemişdir. What it means

Guarding the borders of Muslim lands for a day and a night protecting Muslims (from their enemies) is better than fasting for a month and standing for night prayer for a month. If a Muslim dies while in Ribāt in the cause of Allah, the reward for his good deeds will continue to be added to his account and not stopped. He will receive provision from Paradise, because he is alive in the Paradise of his Lord and will also enjoy the special privilege of being spared the questioning in the grave by the two angels, because he died while being on guard in the cause of Allah.

It is worth noting that Ribāt is a part of Jihad in the cause of Allah, because it means staying at the borders to protect the Muslims from the disbelievers.
