Aishah, the wife of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), reported: The first (form) with which was started the revelation to the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was the true vision in sleep. And he did not see any vision but it came like the bright gleam of dawn. Thenceforth solitude became dear to him and he used to seclude himself in the cave of Hira, where he would engage in tahannuth (and that is a worship for a number of nights) before returning to his family and getting provisions again for this purpose.

He would then return to Khadija and take provisions for a like period, till Truth came upon him while he was in the cave of Hira. There came to him the angel and said: Recite, to which he replied: I am not lettered.

He took hold of me [the Messenger said] and pressed me, till I was hard pressed; thereafter he let me off and said: Recite. I said: I am not lettered. He then again took hold of me and pressed me for the second time till I was hard pressed and then let me off and said: Recite, to which I replied: I am not lettered. He took hold of me and pressed me for the third time, till I was hard pressed and then let me go and said: Recite in the name of your Lord Who created, created man from a clot of blood.

Recite. And your most bountiful Lord is He Who taught the use of pen, taught man what he knew not (al-Qur’an, xcvi. 1-4). Then the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) returned therewith, his heart was trembling, and he went to Khadija and said: Wrap me up, wrap me up! So they wrapped him till the fear had left him.

He then said to Khadija: O Khadija! what has happened to me? and he informed her of the happening, saying: I fear for myself. She replied: It can’t be. Be happy. I swear by Allah that He shall never humiliate you. By Allah, you join ties of relationship, you speak the truth, you bear people’s burden, you help the destitute, you entertain guests, and you help against the vicissitudes which affect people.

Khadija then took him to Waraqa ibn Naufal ibn Asad ibn Abd al-Uzza, and he was the son of Khadija’s uncle, i. e., the brother of her father. And he was the man who had embraced Christianity in the Days of Ignorance (i. e. before Islam) and he used to write books in Arabic and, therefore, wrote Injil in Arabic as God willed that he should write.

He was very old and had become blind Khadija said to him: O uncle! listen to the son of your brother. Waraqa ibn Naufal said: O my nephew! what did you see? The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), then, informed him what he had seen, and Waraqa said to him: It is namus that God sent down to Musa. Would that I were then (during your prophetic career) a young man.

Would that I might be alive when your people would expel you! The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: Will they drive me out? Waraqa said: Yes. Never came a man with a like of what you have brought but met hostilities. If I see your day I shall help you wholeheartedly.

What it means

‘Ā’ishah, Mother of the Believers, (may Allah be pleased with her) informed that the first thing the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) started to experience of the revelation was the true vision in sleep. He never saw in his sleep a vision except that it came true and clear like daylight. Then seclusion was endeared to him, and he used to retreat in the Cave of Hirā’, where he would engage in worship for several nights before returning to his family and taking provisions for it.

He would then go back to Khadījah, Mother of the Believers (may Allah be pleased with her), to take provisions again for a similar number of nights until the truth came to him while he was in the Cave of Hirā’.

Angel Gabriel (peace be upon him) came to him and said: Read! He (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: I do not know how to read. He said: So, he took hold of me, embraced me, and squeezed me until I could no longer bear it and then released me, saying: Read!

I said: I do not know how to read. He took hold of me and pressed me forcefully for the second time until I could no longer bear it and then released me, saying: Read!

I said: I do not know how to read. He took hold of me and pressed me forcefully for the third time and then released me, saying: {Read in the name of your Lord Who created, created man from a clinging clot. Read, and your Lord is the Most Generous.}" [Surat al-‘Alaq: 1-3] He (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) returned with these verses while his heart was trembling out of fear of death.

He entered upon Khadījah bint Khuwaylid, Mother of the Believers, (may Allah be pleased with her) and said: Wrap me in clothes, wrap me in clothes. They wrapped him in clothes until his fear went away.

Then he informed Khadījah of what had happened and said to her: Indeed, I feared death for myself. Khadījah said: No, by Allah, Allah will never fail you. You maintain kinship ties, help the weak who cannot manage on their own, and provide for the poor and destitute by giving them what they cannot find elsewhere. You honor the guest and assist in times of hardship.

Khadījah took him to her cousin Waraqah ibn Nawfal ibn Asad ibn ‘Abdul-‘Uzza, a man who had renounced Jāhiliyyah (the pre-Islamic era of ignorance) and became Christian. He used to write from the Gospel in Hebrew as much as Allah wished him to write. He was an old man and had lost his eyesight.

Khadījah said to him: O my cousin, listen to what your nephew has to say. Waraqah said to him: O my nephew, what have you seen? The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) informed him of what he had seen.

Waraqah said to him: This is Jibrīl (Gabriel), whom Allah had sent to His Prophet Moses (peace be upon him). I wish I were young and could live until the time when your people would drive you out.

He (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: Would they drive me out? He said: Yes. No man has ever come with something like what you have brought without being harmed and treated with hostility. If I should live until your day, I would support you strongly. Then shortly after, Waraqah passed away and the revelation was delayed for some time.

What it teaches

  • Clarifying the beginning of the revelation to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him).
  • The visions of the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) are among the categories of the revelation.
  • The legitimacy of taking provisions, and that it does not contradict reliance on Allah, as the master of those who place their trust in Allah, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him), also took provisions.
  • The perfection of His generosity, Exalted be He, is that He taught His slaves what they did not know and transferred them from the darkness of ignorance to the light of knowledge.
  • The virtue of writing lies in its countless great benefits; through it, knowledge was recorded, rulings were preserved, the history of the early generations was documented, the revealed books of Allah were safeguarded, and the affairs of both religion and the world were upheld.
  • The first thing revealed of the Qur’an was {Read in the name of your Lord Who created} [Surat al-‘Alaq: 1]
  • Noble morals and virtuous qualities are a means of protection from bad outcomes and various hardships. Whoever abounds in goodness will have a favorable end, and both his religious and worldly affairs are hoped to remain safe.
  • It is permissible to praise a person to his face for a valid benefit.
  • We should reassure the one who has become fearful, give him glad tidings, and mention the reasons for his safety.
  • The greatest proof and most eloquent argument for the perfection of Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her), the soundness of her opinion, her strong character, and her profound understanding as she combined in her description of the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) all the fundamentals and principles of noble virtues. This is because kindness is either toward relatives or strangers, either through physical effort or wealth, either to those capable of managing their affairs or those who are not. She elaborated appropriately with eloquence, fitting the situation where detailed praise was necessary.
  • Whoever is faced with a matter, it is recommended that he inform someone whose advice and sound judgment he trusts.
