Ali ibn Abu Talib said: “Witr is not definite (obligatory) nor is it like your prescribed prayers. But the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) prayed Witr, then he said: ‘O people of the Qur’an! Perform Witr, for Allah is Witr* and He loves the odd (numbered).’” * Meaning ‘one’ which is the first of the odd numbers; He is unique, and there is nothing like Him, similar or equal.

Telah menceritakan kepada kami [Ali bin Muhammad] dan [Muhammad bin Ash Shabbah] keduanya berkata; telah menceritakan kepada kami [Abu Bakr bin Ayyasy] dari [Abu Ishaq] dari [Ashim bin Dlamrah As Saluli] ia berkata, " [Ali bin Abu Thalib] berkata, "Shalat witir tidak wajib dan tidak pula seperti shalat maktubah kalian, hanya saja Rasulullah shallallahu 'alaihi wasallam selalu mengerjakannya, beliau mengatakan: "Wahai ahli Qur`an, hendaklah kalian shalat witir, sesungguhnya Allah menyukai shalat witir

Ali bin Ebi Ta'lib (r.a.)'den; şöyle demiştir: Şüphesiz vitir namazı behemahal yapılması gerekli değildir.

What it means

This noble Hadīth includes an order for the people of the Qur'an, who are Allah's select slaves, to perform the Witr Prayer. This is because Allah is one and is unique in His essence, His attributes, and His actions and He loves what is single and odd. ''People of the Qur'an'' refers here to the believers in general, whether or not they recite the Qur'an.

However, it is likely that those who recite the Qur'an are worthier of this address. In this regard, al-Khattābi said: ''It refers to those who recite and memorize the Qur'an. They were specifically mentioned because of their special honor and as a sign of special care. So, the people of the Qur'an should regularly perform the Witr Prayer, even though this is required from everyone.

Since they have the privilege of being role models and have more knowledge that drives them to hasten to acts of obedience and good deeds, therefore they are worthier of being addressed by this prophetic order.”
