The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said, “A believer’s soul remains suspended according to his debt until it is settled or paid off on his behalf”. Related by Ahmad and At-Tirmidhi.
وَعَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رضى الله عنه عَنِ
اَلنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «نَفْسُ اَلْمُؤْمِنِ مُعَلَّقَةٌ بِدَيْنِهِ، حَتَّى يُقْضَى عَنْهُ»

صحيح. رواه أحمد (2/440 و 475 و 508)، والترمذي (1078) و (1079)، وقال الترمذي: «هذا حديث حسن». قلت: هو صحيح؛ إذ له شواهد عن أربعة من الصحابة ذكرتها «بالأصل»
