Ibn Umar said, “While the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was on the pulpit, a man asked him how to offer the night prayers. He replied, ‘Pray two rakat at a time and then two and then two and so on, and if you are afraid of the dawn (the approach of the time of the Fajr prayer) pray one raka and that will be the witr for all the rakat which you have offered.’

Ibn Umar said, ‘The last rakat of the night prayer should be odd, for the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) ordered it to be so.’”

Beliau menjawab: "Dua rakaat dua rakaat.

İbn Ömer (r.a.)'den şöyle nakledilmiştir: "Nebi Sallallahu Aleyhi ve Sellem minberde iken adamın biri ona, 'Gece namazı hakkında ne buyuruyorsun?' diye sordu. O da şöyle buyurdu: İkişer ikişer kılınır. Eğer namaz kılan sabah namazı vaktinin girmesinden endişe ederse tek rekat kılar. Kıldığı bu tek rekat önceden kıldıklarını vitre çevirir."

İbn Ömer şöyle derdi: "Geceleyin kıldığınız son namaz vitir olsun. Çünkü Nebi Sallallahu Aleyhi ve Sellem böyle emretmiştir. Tekrar: 473, 990, 993, 995, 1137. MÜSLİM HADİSİ VE İZAH İÇİN TIKLA

What it means

A man asked the Prophet (ﷺ) while he was delivering a sermon on the pulpit: O Messenger of Allah, teach me how to perform the night prayer. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: Pray and make Taslīm after every two Rak‘ahs. When you fear that dawn is near, then pray one Rak‘ah, which will make what you have prayed Witr. And he (ﷺ) used to advise making Witr the last prayer of the night.

What it teaches

  • The basic rule for night prayer is to make Taslīm after every two Rak‘ahs, except for the Witr prayer.
  • The night prayer is not limited to a specific number of Rak‘ahs, as indicated by the unrestricted wording of the text.
  • An-Nawawi said: The Hadīth "the prayer of the night and day is two by two" refers to what is preferable—that one makes Taslīm after every two Rak‘ahs. This applies to both the voluntary prayers of the night and of the day, as it is recommended to conclude with Taslīm after every two Rak‘ahs.
  • An-Nawawi said: This Hadīth is evidence that the Sunnah is to make Witr the last prayer of the night, and that its time ends with the rising of dawn. This is the famous view in our school of thought, and it is the opinion held by the majority of scholars.
