The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) noticed the absence of Thabit ibn Qais. A man said, “O Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam)! I shall bring you his news.” So he went to him and saw him sitting in his house drooping his head (sadly).

He asked Thabit, “What’s the matter?” Thabit replied, “An evil situation: A man used to raise his voice over the voice of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and so all his good deeds have been annulled and he is from the people of Hell.”

The man went back and told the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) that Thabit had said so-and-so. (The sub-narrator, Musa ibn Anas said, “The man went to Thabit again with glad tidings).”

The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said to him, “Go and say to Thabit: ‘You are not from the people of Fire, but from the people of Paradise.’”

Enes b.

Yani böylelikle Nebi sallaııahu aleyhi ve sellem'in: "O cennetliklerdendir" sözünün doğruluğu ortaya çıkmış olmaktadır. Çünkü o şehit düştü

Sahih al-Bukhari 3613, Book 61, Virtues and Merits of the Prophet (pbuh) and his Companions, Hadith 120. 1 min read

What it means

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) noticed the absence of Thābit ibn Qays (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked about him. So, a man said: I will bring you his news and the reason behind his absence. He went to him and found him drooping his head sadly in his house.

He asked him: What is wrong with you? Thābit told him about the evil circumstances he was experiencing, for he used to raise his voice over the Prophet's voice, and Allah threatened those who did so with the annulment of their deeds and that they would be among the people of Hellfire. The man returned to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and told him about that.

Thereupon, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) ordered him to go back to Thābit and give him glad tidings that he was not one of the people of Hellfire but one of the people of Paradise. This is because his voice was naturally loud and because he was the speaker of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and the speaker of the Ansār.

What it teaches

  • The Hadīth shows the merit of Thābit ibn Qays (may Allah be pleased with him) and tells that he will be one of the people of Paradise.
  • The Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) cared about the Companions and used to ask about them.
  • It demonstrates the Companions' heedfulness and their fear that their good deeds might be rendered worthless.
  • It is obligatory to address the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) politely during his lifetime and to lower our voices upon hearing his Sunnah, after his death.
