I asked Aishah about wiping over the khuffain (leather slippers) and she said: Ask Ali ibn Abi Talib (رضي الله عنه), for he used to travel with the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). So I asked him and he said: For the traveller (the khuffain in may be wiped over) for three days and nights and for the one who is not travelling one day and night. Yahya said: He – meaning Shubah – used to attribute it to the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), then he stopped doing that.
