The Companions of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) we eat but we are not satisfied. He said: Perhaps you eat separately. They replied: Yes. He said: If you gather together at your food and mention Allah’s name, you will be blessed in it.

Beliau bersabda: "Kemungkinan kalian makan sendiri-sendiri." Mereka menjawab, "Ya."

Abu Daud berkata, "Apabila engkau berada pada sebuah pesta kemudian dihidangkan makan malam, maka janganlah engkau memakannya hingga pemilik rumah mengizinkanmu

Vahşî b. Harb (b. Vahşî b. Harb)'in dedesinden rivayet olunmuştur: Nebi (s.a.v.)'in sahâbîleri (Hz. Nebi'e): Ey Allah'ın Rasûlü, biz (yemek) yiyoruz, fakat doymuyoruz, demişler. (Hz.

The note in this edition

Abu Dawud said: If you are invited to a wedding feast before you, do not take it until the owner of the house (i.e. the host) allows you (to eat).

What it means

Some of the Companions asked the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him), saying: We eat, but we do not get satiated. Thereupon, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said to them: Perhaps you eat separately, and each of you eats alone. They said: Yes. He said: Gather together and do not eat separately, and mention the name of Allah when eating by saying: Bismillāh—it will be blessed for you, and you will feel satisfied.

What it teaches

  • Gathering for food and saying the name of Allah before eating are means of bringing blessings to the food and feeling satisfied with it.
  • Division is entirely evil, and unity is entirely good.
  • Encouragement to eat together and to mention Allah's name before eating food.
  • As-Sindi said: Through gathering (to eat), blessings descend upon the food provisions; and by mentioning the name of Allah Almighty, the devil is prevented from reaching the food.
