The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: If one who is afflicted with poverty refers it to me, his poverty will not be brought to an end; but if one refers it to Allah, He will soon give him sufficiency, either by a speedy death or by a sufficiency which comes later.

What it means

Ibn Mas‘ūd informs us that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said that whoever is afflicted with poverty or destitution, and he seeks relief from the people, i.e. he expresses his poverty to them, complains about it, and asks them for help to relieve him from poverty: the result is that his poverty will not be relieved, and every time one of his needs is fulfilled, he is afflicted with another need that is harder than the first one.

Whereas he who seeks relief from Allah and relies upon Him alone, Allah will soon relieve him of his poverty and distress with wealth and sufficiency in this life or later on in the Hereafter.

Hadīth commentators said that this Hadīth conveys the same meaning as the verse: {And whoever fears Allah, He will make for him a way out. And will provide for him from where he does not expect. And whoever relies upon Allah - then He is sufficient for him} [Sūrat At-Talāq: 2-3]. Relief might be in the form of a wealthy relative who passes away thus he inherits from him, or in the form of money that Allah blesses him with, thus making him rich.
